The 2009 Coconut Grove SC Open Orange Bowl results and photos can be seen here. For a great write up read on.
Playing on Biscayne Bay for the holidays-it’s not just for kids! Several wise grownups came down to Biscayne Bay to enjoy the open Orange Bowl hosted by the Coconut Grove Sailing Club Dec 27th-30th. We braved harsh 75 degree temperatures and 5 to 18 knot breezes for four days. Canadian Robert Davis and USA's Kyle Rogachenko, now sailing at ODU treated us to a real show on how to sail Lasers. These two are campaigning for 2012 Olympic berths, and fought it out until the end, with Kyle winning the tiebreaker. Perennial local favorite Augie Diaz led the Masters, with a 6th overall. The fleet included sailors recently graduated from the Junior Orange Bowl to a senior citizen collecting social security. Entrants represented Canada, Puerto Rico, several snowbird states and a few Floridians. 26 Lasers sailed at least one race, with the whole fleet electing to use the Standard rig.The conditions were spectacular over the four days of the regatta, with a little bit of something for everybody. The light air (OK no air) enthusiasts had their moment on the first day, when one race was sailed in a dying breeze. Ability to keep the boat moving through the wake chop was very useful. Day 2 featured four races sailed in a building NW breeze that gusted in the 18 knot range, so people that liked to hike had some fun. The wind was slow to build on day 3 and one race featured a 90 degree wind shift, but when the breeze did come in it was a nice 15 out of the NNW, with enough fetch down the bay to kick up some waves to ride. The wind cooperated again on the last day with a mild easterly blowing off the Gulf Stream and giving us our last two races well before the cutoff time of 2pm. The folks at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club were excellent hosts with well-run races, a keg and food ashore after racing. They’ve pulled some strings to make parking easy and have gotten some local members to help with housing. That takes away a couple excuses to not show up. If your kids are racing in the youth event, you owe it to yourself to bring an extra Laser and come play with the grownups! And if your kids are not sailing, you still owe it to yourself to come enjoy Florida sunshine and Biscayne Bay sailing!
